In an exclusive interview with Radio Times, Sam Spruell confirmed that Prince Maekar Targaryen will not appear in Season 2 of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, despite the tense cliffhanger of Season 1. The news comes as the show prepares to move into the events of The Sworn Sword, George R.R. Martin’s second Dunk & Egg novella, which focuses on new adventures for the titular duo rather than the Targaryen court.
Season 1 ended with Maekar discovering that his youngest son, Egg, had snuck away to join Dunk on the road. Unlike the novella, where Maekar implicitly permits Egg’s actions, the show emphasizes that Egg is acting against his father’s wishes. This raised speculation about Maekar’s potential role in the next season, but Spruell confirmed in the exclusive interview that he will not be returning. He expressed hope that the character might appear in future seasons, highlighting the dramatic tension and father-son conflict that made Maekar such a compelling presence.
Season 2 will follow Dunk and Egg as they become embroiled in a political dispute involving Lady Rohanne Webber and Ser Eustace Osgrey. Showrunner Ira Parker revealed that the storyline takes place during a drought, creating unique challenges for the characters and production team. The shift in focus allows the series to expand beyond Ashford and explore new settings, conflicts, and alliances that add depth to the Dunk & Egg narrative.
The young Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, is set to take a more active role in the second season. Parker confirmed that audiences will see Egg “get into the action a little bit,” reflecting his character’s growth and the actor’s physical preparation for the role. This approach suggests a tighter, character-driven season that centers on Dunk and Egg’s evolving partnership while keeping the story grounded in Martin’s original tales. With Maekar’s absence, Season 2 marks a bold narrative shift, giving Dunk and Egg room to shine and promising fans fresh adventures in Westeros.
