GoFundMe for Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane’s daughters sparks online backlash as social media users question family’s finances: 'Why are rich people asking for money?'

A GoFundMe campaign set up to support Eric Dane’s daughters has sparked widespread debate after the Grey’s Anatomy star passed away at 53. The actor, who revealed his ALS diagnosis less than a year ago, left behind two daughters, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 14, whom he shared with ex Rebecca Gayheart. Friends and family quickly rallied to support the girls, highlighting their central place in Dane’s life.

Initially, the campaign aimed to raise $250,000, later increasing to $500,000, and has so far gathered around $337,500. The page emphasised the goal of providing stability for the children during an incredibly difficult period. Supporters included celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, who donated significant amounts.




However, the fundraiser soon came under review. GoFundMe’s Trust and Safety team temporarily paused donations to confirm that the funds would reach the intended beneficiaries. A spokesperson assured the public that all contributions were safely held by payment processors during the verification process.



While many offered support, some critics questioned why the daughters of a Hollywood actor would need public financial assistance. Online commentators noted that Dane was estimated to have a net worth of around $3 million, with some suggesting he might have had life insurance. “Doesn’t sit right that rich people ask for money… GoFundMe is meant for poor people,” wrote one user. Others echoed similar sentiments, sparking a debate over celebrity privilege versus the real costs of illness.

Actress Kate Walsh, Dane’s Grey’s Anatomy co-star, defended the campaign, reminding critics that even actors can face financial strain during debilitating illnesses. She stressed that the fundraiser aimed to support the daughters in a situation where the family might not have immediate access to sufficient resources.




Friends of Dane, including Mike McGuiness, reflected on the actor’s battle with ALS, describing it as brutal and life-altering. McGuiness noted that the combination of health issues and the pandemic affected Dane’s work life and earnings, underscoring the practical need for the fundraiser.



After its review, GoFundMe confirmed that the fundraiser had been verified and that the family had been added as the beneficiary. Similar scrutiny has arisen in recent celebrity fundraisers, including one for James Van Der Beek’s family following his battle with stage III colorectal cancer. These cases highlight the tension between public perception of celebrity wealth and the real financial challenges faced during serious illness.



Despite criticism, supporters continue to rally around Dane’s daughters. The debate raises broader questions about privacy, philanthropy, and the expectations placed on public figures. As Walsh reminded the public, “Even those in the spotlight can face unexpected hardships, and every contribution counts for a family in need.”
