Social media has been buzzing with reactions after a celebratory video featuring Crip Mac surfaced online. The West Coast rapper and YouTuber personality, born Trevor Hurd, is seen dancing joyfully outside a prison facility following his release. Reports suggest that Hurd has completed his sentence related to a 2023 case, and the viral clip has quickly sparked excitement and debate among fans eager to see what the outspoken artist does next. But why was he arrested? Let's find out what really happened.

What were Crip Mac's federal gun charges?

Crip Mac ran into legal trouble in September 2023 when police reportedly found him in possession of a ghost gun, a handgun without a serial number, along with ten rounds of ammunition, reported Fox 11 Los Angeles.

He appeared in LA County court on December 5, where a judge dismissed the state-level charges, allowing federal authorities to take over the case. Billboard reported that Crip Mac then faced federal gun-related charges, with the US Marshals arresting him and informing him that his case had been transferred to the US Attorney's office.

He was formally charged federally with being a 'felon in possession of a firearm. '

Did Crip Mac’s past crimes influence federal involvement?

Crip Mac's history of alleged felony offences is to have played a key role in federal authorities taking over his case. According to Billboard, Hurd had faced multiple arrests in the past, including charges for attempted second-degree armed robbery, grand theft, and transportation of controlled substances dating back to 2014, 2015, and 2017.

He was also arrested on the same federal gun-related charge in LA County in July 2022 and October 2017. An unsealed LA County court indictment highlighted his prior felony convictions, noting that he "possessed such ammunition knowing that he had earlier been convicted of at least one of the following felony crimes.”

According to PrimeTimer, California-based defence attorney Curtis Briggs explained that transferring cases to federal authorities is common when local authorities feel that lenient sentencing does not adequately address repeat offences, allowing for potentially longer prison terms.
