Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is beginning 2026 under growing personal strain, as a deep disagreement with his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, over his possible return to the U.K. becomes the most serious challenge their marriage has faced so far. While the couple has weathered intense public pressure before, insiders now say this unresolved issue has turned into an emotional divide that neither side can easily move past.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage is strained

Prince Harry, 41, and Meghan Markle, 44, stepped back from their senior royal roles in 2020 and settled in Montecito, California, with their children, Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4. For years, the couple appeared united in building a new life in the U.S. However, as 2025 ended, insiders told Radar that the question of Britain had resurfaced and become a major source of tension.

According to one source, the disagreement is “deeply emotional” and “threatens to tear them apart, geographically and emotionally.” The insider stressed that the strain is not due to a lack of love, saying, “The tension between them isn't rooted in a breakdown of affection or commitment.”

Harry’s growing pull toward Britain

Sources say Harry has become increasingly focused on repairing his family ties. His brief meeting with King Charles at Clarence House in September and the ongoing review of his U.K. security status have added urgency to his thinking. Insiders claim Harry now believes he is close to winning that security battle, which has only strengthened his desire to spend more time in Britain.

“He brings it up repeatedly,” the source said, noting Harry’s concern about his father’s declining health. “In his mind, the coming year carries a real sense of urgency and consequence.”

The insider added, “He and Meghan are broken in a lot of ways, and this drive to return to Britain could truly break them.”

Meghan’s resistance and emotional scars

Meghan, by contrast, is described as deeply resistant to the idea of returning to the U.K. According to insiders, Britain represents one of the most painful chapters of her life.

“For her, the U.K. is bound up with some of the most stressful and painful periods of her life,” the source claimed. “The idea of returning triggers memories of constant scrutiny and emotional strain.”

That fear has made the issue hard for Meghan to even discuss. One insider explained that she avoids the topic because “it carries so much emotional weight for her,” especially if Harry’s security concerns are resolved.

Harry and Meghan’s separate paths

The disagreement has been made worse by the couple’s increasingly separate professional lives. Meghan, a Los Angeles native, has focused on Hollywood projects, including her Netflix work and the expansion of her As Ever lifestyle brand.

Harry, meanwhile, is said to feel less settled. He stepped back from his Sentebale charity in March amid reports of internal conflict, and friends believe the imbalance between their careers has added more pressure to decisions about where the family should be based.

According to sources, discussions about Britain became more frequent over Christmas and into the new year. Harry has spoken publicly about reconciliation with his family, saying last year that he would “love” a reunion amid health challenges faced by his father and sister-in-law.

Meghan’s instincts differ. “Her instinct is to shield both herself and the children from experiences she worries could reopen painful chapters,” one source said. Harry, however, believes their children should know his roots and have a real relationship with their grandfather.

Divorce rumours resurface

The couple has faced divorce speculation before, including claims that Meghan explored a post-divorce book idea. She dismissed those rumours in a recent interview, saying, “No one in the world loves me more than him… He loves me so boldly, fully.”

Even so, insiders say the unresolved Britain question continues to weigh heavily on their marriage. One source warned, “If neither of them is willing or able to compromise, there is a real concern… that this single, unresolved question could evolve into the breaking point for their relationship, which could see them finally file for divorce this year.”

Harry and Meghan, who married in 2018, have lived in California since stepping away from royal life in 2020.
