For a long time, travel meant packing your bags, booking tickets and figuring who would take care of your pet while you were gone.

Well, it's not the case anymore.

For us, pets aren't just part of the family; they are the plan.

The shift from 'pet-friendly' to 'pet-first'

Well, let's be real, calling a place "pet-friendly" used to mean the bare minimum. Maybe your dog was allowed. Maybe.

Now? That's not enough. The new-age travellers are flipping the script, hence the question, "Can my pet come?" They are asking, "Does this trip even work for my pet?"

And the numbers back it up. With nearly 15 million global searches for pet-friendly stays on platforms like Booking.com and $157 billion spent on pets globally, this isn’t just cute; it's a full-blown shift in how people travel.

In India, this mindset is growing fast. Be it a Goa getaway or a quick hill station escape, pets are no longer an afterthought. They are a part of the itinerary.

Trips that actually revolved around your dog

This isn't just about accommodation; it's about how people travel.

  • Nature over nightlife: Almost half of pet owners are choosing hikes, parks and open spaces.
  • City, but make it pet-friendly: Cafes, breweries and even urban hangouts now need to welcome pets.
  • Beach days, but together: Pet-friendly beaches and swimming spots are becoming a must now.
  • Road trips over flights: A massive 93 per cent prefer flexible road trips so their pets can tag along. Your dog isn't just coming along; they’re influencing your entire vibe.

The new checklist: WiFi, views...and pet parks

Whenever we book a stay, there is a complete checklist that looks different. Is there space for my pet to move around? Are there nearby parks or walking areas? , can I leave my pet safely at the accommodation if needed? Or are there pet-friendly cafés nearby?

Too many queries, right?

Well, interestingly, travellers today are almost equally open to hostels and rentals, as long as the pet policies work. Mostly because, honestly, what's the point of a perfect stay if your pet isn't comfortable?

It's about more than pets: why travel feels incomplete without them

They are not just animals in the house; they are emotional support daily and sometimes the most stable relationship in your life. So leaving them behind for a vacation? It doesn't feel practical; it feels wrong.

And suddenly, travelling without your pet feels incomplete.

Moreover, rising pet adoption rates, more people living independently in cities and a stronger focus on mental well-being.

Travelling with pets is about redefining priorities

Zoom out a bit and this trend is bigger than travel. It's about how Gen Z is redefining what matters. Earlier, travel was aspirational: luxury hotels, packed itineraries, "doing the most".

At this point, it's less of a trend and more of a mindset. From road trips with your dog in the backseat to café hopping with your cat in a carrier, travel is becoming more personal, more flexible, and a lot more wholesome.

Now, it’s becoming more intentional.
